Google has announced a conversational way to analyse BigQuery data through Gemini in Google Sheets. The feature works with spreadsheets connected to BigQuery through Connected Sheets.

What changed

According to Google, Gemini can answer natural-language questions against the full connected BigQuery dataset, rather than only the rows visible in a spreadsheet. Users can ask follow-up questions or describe an analysis they want to build.

Google says Gemini can propose a plan and create a new tab with connected spreadsheet objects such as formulas, pivot tables and charts. Users still need permission to query the connected data.

Availability

The rollout began October 19 and may take up to 15 days. Google lists supported business, enterprise, education and consumer plans in its announcement; access is not universal.

QueryFun takeaway

This makes the question easier to express, but understanding the data still matters. Specify the time period, metric and grouping you want. Then compare a generated total with a trusted SQL query or existing report before using it for a decision.
